5,000 to be trained to meet new US food law

Over 5,000 persons will be trained in good agricultural practices (GAP) for exporting to the US markets.Fifty-four persons are being trained by the Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (JIFSAN) to in turn, guide 5,200 farmers in GAP under the US Food Safety Modernisation Act (FSMA).

European Union and United States to launch negotiations for a Transatlantic Trade and Investment Par

UNITED STATES Brussels, 13 February 2013

 

The EU and US have decided to take their economic relationship to a higher level by agreeing to launch negotiations for a comprehensive trade and investment agreement. When negotiations are completed, this EU-US agreement would be the biggest bilateral trade deal ever negotiated – and it could add 0.5% to the EU’s annual economic output.

CHTA President & CTO Chairman Support Abolishing UK Air Passenger Duty (APD) Based On Pricewaterhous

Richard J. Doumeng, president, Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA), and Beverly Nicholson-Doty, chairman, Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) Council of Ministers and Commissioners of Tourism, are supporting a recent study by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) which shows that the abolition of the UK's Air Passenger Duty (APD) could bring a lasting boost to the UK economy, generating a net tax gain for the Treasury and creating almost 60,000 new jobs.

Jamaica moves to sign IMF agreement with ‘cautious optimism’

U.S., Mexico reach tomato deal to avert trade war

The U.S. government and Mexican tomato growers reached a tentative agreement on Saturday that reduces the threat of a costly trade war stemming from a U.S. decision last year to pull out of a 1996 bilateral tomato trade pact.

Trade Ministers at Davos Press for “Meaningful Results” in Bali

WTO members should take stock at Easter on whether “meaningful results” at their upcoming December ministerial in Bali are possible, trade ministers from over 20 members said following an informal meeting last week in Davos. The gathering was held on the sidelines of the Annual World Economic Forum, where business leaders and policymakers gathered to review the tentative signs of recovery in the world economy. Trade, in particular, was a recurring topic during the five-day discussions, as speculation continues over the possible launch of US-EU negotiations amid the ramping up of the race for the new WTO head.

Toward a Canada-EU trade deal, sooner rather than later

Canada now has an additional reason for bringing its trade negotiations with the European Union to a successful conclusion, sooner rather than later. Efforts are under way to launch similar negotiations between the United States and the EU, which could overshadow the proposed Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between Canada and Europe, if the CETA talks drag on. As Lawrence Herman of Cassels Brock LLP puts it, there is a “downside risk that the final deal with Canada is delayed and that the EU then turns its attention to negotiations with the Americans.”
